St Mary's Hill Spyglass

An occasional glimpse through the St Mary’s Hill Spyglass about what is ripening in the meadows and forests, which hidden corners of the Jizera Mountains are still waiting to be discovered, what is happening at local glassmaking festivals, what the weather is like and what condition the cross-country skiing trails are in, which wondrous plants are in bloom, which songbirds are performing their regular garden concerts – and whether the does have once again come to wish us good night while munching on my herbs!

In short, a gazette about life in an old glassmaking hamlet where the rhythm of the seasons still sets the pace and time itself seems to have paused…

Does in the Gentle Rain

Autumn has arrived to us in full swing. Since this morning, a gentle mist has been drifting along the forest's edge, and rain has been pouring down. The drops whisper through the leaves, bringing out the vibrant autumn colours, sparkling like jewels on each tiny leaf...

Indian summer is slowly coming to an end – and what a beautiful one it has been!

Long shadows, soft light, lush, deep-green grass sprinkled with the first colourful autumn leaves, rich forest soil teeming with mushrooms… That was this year’s Indian summer, now slowly drawing to a close, giving way to shorter autumn days and the first frosty mornings.

It’s beautiful here, come what may…

And suddenly, out of nowhere came a glimpse of our genius …

Just a stone’s throw from the Jára Cimrman Museum, Lighthouse and Cinema, a brand-new look-to-point has suddenly popped up above Albrechtice. For anyone unfamiliar with Jára Cimrman: he is the fictional Czech universal genius – inventor, playwright, explorer and master of virtually every conceivable discipline – whose life and achievements have been studied in the Czech Republic for decades with affectionate mock-academic seriousness.

The River That Was Too Tame for Swarovski

When Daniel Swarovski was born in 1892 in Jiřetín pod Bukovou, then known as Georgenthal, not far from the River Kamenice, into a family of glass cutters, this Jizera Mountains beauty had already been frolicking for countless ages from its source on the north-western slope of Černá hora, 975 metres above sea level, towards Podspálov, where, after 36 kilometres and a descent of almost 700 metres, it finally came to rest in the gentle embrace of the Jizera river.

Thousands of stars overhead, and the dark forest all around

In a town, if you’re lucky, you may see a few hundred stars; in a large city, perhaps only a few dozen. Above the Jizera Mountains, under good conditions, the naked eye can make out around 1,900–2,000. The reason is the low level of light pollution.

Mushroom season is here!

The lush, plump moss is glowing in every shade of green, and the first little boletes are nestling in its soft velvet. And among them, this king! Let mushroom season begin! We recommend slipping a jar with a lid into your basket alongside your knife, because the blueberries are still around too :-)

A bird concert in the garden, conducted by the free Merlin app

Our garden bird matinées begin at sunrise, and the repertoire changes throughout the day as each little songster pops off for lunch or flies over to sing for the neighbours. We recommend downloading the free Merlin Bird ID app to your phone, so you always have the full programme of the moment at hand, along with short profiles of the individual soloists :-)

An unassuming beauty that can turn the whole of August blue.

Blue everywhere you look! Especially on one's hands and trousers :-( Thanks to their blue-violet pigments, blueberries are rich in anthocyanins, which belong to the flavonoid family. Research suggests that eating blueberries regularly may have a beneficial effect particularly on vascular function and certain cardiometabolic markers. End of the educational interlude — back to work! What one picks in August will be a very welcome find in the freezer come February :-) And what else would you use in winter to make the traditional blueberry dumplings that are such a favourite here in the mountains?

"The time of (un)ripe raspberries is over…"

…as the famous Czech singer Hana Zagorová once sang. And I am happy to report that the raspberries have now ripened. They are not only juicy and wonderfully sweet, but, set against the pink haze of common bent I wrote about last time, exceptionally pretty as well. Almost too pretty to put in a cake… (But what a delicious cake it was!)

From Bobsleighs to UFOs: Discovering the Secrets of Malý Špičák

Tucked into the woods just a short distance from our rental cottage, Chalupa U Tří srnek, lies a mountain peak with a history as wild as its scenery. While many visitors flock to the famous Tanvaldský Špičák for skiing and panoramas, its smaller neighbor, Malý Špičák, hides a pioneering sports legacy and some of the most striking modern architecture in the Jizera Mountains.

Nothing common about the common bent!

The pink veil that has appeared behind our cottage is the work of a delicate grass typically found in upland meadows and pastures. On its own, each stem is utterly inconspicuous, almost translucent, but when thousands of them come together, there is no overlooking them – and no stopping them. Much as in life…

We hope the fun – and the bentgrass – will last a little while longer, because we could gaze at this pink splendour for hours!
