The Tragic History and Timeless Appeal of the "Burst Dam" in Desná

Deep in the Jizera Mountains lies one of the region's most captivating yet tragic historical sites: the Protržená přehrada (Burst Dam) on the Bílá Desná river.

Bílá Desná Protržená přehrada (Burst Dam)

Built between 1912 and 1915, this earthen dam was designed to protect the valley from devastating floods. Tragically, just ten months after its completion, design flaws and poor ground surveys led to disaster. On September 18, 1916, the dam breached, unleashing a 13-meter wall of water that swept through the town of Desná. The catastrophe claimed 67 lives, destroyed dozens of homes, and left hundreds homeless.

Today, nature has reclaimed the valley, but the stark stone gate valve tower still stands as a haunting monument to the disaster.
